Leesburg Chief of Police Gregory C. Brown will officially retire on Dec. 1 after 26 years of service in the Leesburg and Loudoun community, the department announced on Thursday, Oct. 20.

Brown has held the position of chief since Oct. 3, 2016, and has since expanded the department to a staff of 90 sworn officers and 18 civilians.

He began his law enforcement career with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department in 1996 and joined the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office in 1997, where he served for almost 20 years, attaining the rank of Captain before being appointed Leesburg Chief of Police.

During his tenure, Brown helped oversee several projects such as the implementation of a new dispatch telephone system and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system, and equipping the police department with body worn and in car cameras.

Additionally, the Leesburg Police Department was re-accredited by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services in 2018 and is scheduled to be re-accredited in 2022.

Brown's next position will be as Executive Director of the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy (NVCJTA), where he will oversee the training of members of the Town of Leesburg Police Department and 16 other regional law enforcement agencies.

Chief Brown previously served as a Deputy Director of Basic Training at the NVCJTA from 2013 to 2015.

Deputy Chief Vanessa Grigsby will serve as acting police chief until Chief Brown’s replacement is selected. A nationwide search for Leesburg’s next police chief is underway.

"We thank Chief Brown for his dedication to the Town of Leesburg, and we wish him well in his next endeavor," the department said.
